Heaven: What does the Bible say about God’s home?

Since Heaven is a goal that most people have, What do we know about it?

We don’t know where heaven is or even if it’s in the same dimension of space, time and matter. For the sake of argument, let’s just assume that Heaven is God’s home wherever that might be. Based on the scriptures, there is a lot we do know but there is also a lot we know very little about. In this article, I’ve collected several of the more popular verses on the subject. What questions do these verses answer for you? Or, what questions do these verses generate?

It’s often true, that the more we learn about a subject, the more questions we have. If we want to live in God’s heavenly home, it could be a worthwhile effort to learn more about it. God’s book is always the best place to start. Scratch that last line. It’s not only the best place to start, but it’s the best place to finish as well.

Let’s take a look at some key verses on the subject of God’s home.

 

Acts 4:12

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved.”

Bummer, it looks like there may be a requirement for those who wish to gain access. Peter was preaching to a crowd and said that trusting and believing in Jesus, and the power of his name was the way to guarantee access to eternal life. It’s a good thing the price is already paid. See here

 

Romans 1:18

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of human beings who suppress the truth by their wickedness

This verse is part of the introduction to the last book in the Bible. Here we learn that God’s wrath, when it begins, will be revealed from God’s home. It won’t start on earth, because the devil still has access up there until the time of wrath begins.

 

Matthew 7:21

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

We can’t fake our way into God’s home. The Lord can see right through our tricks that we play on each other. It’s best when we are honest with God and ourselves. God’s home is available to all who want to go, but don’t plan on getting there by wearing a cross, and carrying a Bible once in a while. Only sincere, broken, and repentant sinners have a small chance at heaven. But thankfully, that’s all the chance we need. The Lord sees to that.

 

Acts 1:11

“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

So, it looks like Jesus went up into the clouds on his way to heaven. This creates more questions for me. Did he keep going to the end of the universe? Where and how far did He go? We also learn from this verse that he will return from his Father’s home by returning through the clouds.

 

Matthew 6:9

“This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,”

God’s Father, our Heavenly Father is there now. When we pray to Him, our prayers are heard there, no matter how far away it is. That’s faster than the speed of light for sure.

 

Isaiah 14:12

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

This verse is part of Isaiah’s very long prophecy book. He includes a lot in his book, including several important clues about the mystery creature called Satan. The morning star, mentioned here, is almost certainly that high ranking angelic being who led a rebellion against God. He lost his glorious position but based on several passages we learn he still has access to God’s home for reasons understood by God alone. It’s part of God’s plan. In Revelation 12 we read about the removal of Satan and his demon hoards.

 

The Apostle John, the writer of the Book of Revelation, saw heaven open. He was taken in his spirit, not his physical body, to visit God’s home. During the final days before Satan is finally dealt with, John saw Jesus on a white horse. He was ready to ride out of heaven and come down to judge the rebellious on earth.

 

1 Thessalonians 4:16

For the Lord, himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

So, in the previous verse, we heard John’s perspective. Now we see the Apostle Paul’s version of the return of Jesus. He will come back down from His Father’s home. There will be a loud shout from an angel to announce the Lord’s return.

 

In the first verse we looked at, Peter said there is one name to trust in to get to heaven. Now in this verse, Paul says if we do have that trust that Peter talked about then we are already citizens of that kingdom. No need to pass a test or fill out any forms. The paperwork is done for us.
