Pogroms: Parallels Between Recent Hamas Attacks and Historical Persecution of Jews”
From Pogroms to Present: Let’s examine some parallels between the recent Hamas Attack on October 7th, 2023, and the historical persecution of Jews in the last century. In addition, I want to briefly touch on the growing antisemitism around the world. As well as the alarming fact that many Christian organizations are guilty of strong biases against Jewish people or Judaism.
But first, here is a brief definition of a pogrom, from Vocabulary.com.
“The organized destruction of an ethnic group called a pogrom. The word comes to English via some similar Yiddish and Russian words. Pogrom literally means devastation.”
We know that Germany, led by Adolf Hilter, attempted to eradicate the Jewish population. Word War Two expanded. And other nations joined in the devastation of the Jewish population. Sadly, many Protestant and Catholic Churches remained silent. Or worse, they often participated in revealing Jewish hideouts.
Unfortunately, the world, and especially Israel, could be on the cusp of another round of organized massacres of Jewish people and those who support them.
The biblical prophets were abundantly clear in their writings. One final round of Satanic darkness will cover the earth. I pray we are not there yet. More likely this phase will die out in six months to a year. But the inevitable final seven years of Daniel’s prophecy will occur. But rest assured, God will not allow the complete destruction of Israel.
God Still Loves Israel and has a beautiful purpose for them
There is much confusion regarding the Jewish People. And of course, deep-seated hatred as well. Antisemitism is rising again around the world. What the Nazi party of Germany made infamous is now making a strong comeback. Jew hatred is very popular now. Ironically, it is getting worse after Israel suffered a devastating terrorist attack on Oct. 7th, 2023.
Never mind the Arabs and Muslims for a moment. Many Christians believe God has cast aside the Jewish People. That sentiment is easy to find among the articles, comments, videos, etc. You can discover it all across the internet. Since they rejected Jesus, they are no longer worthy of God’s blessings. They deserve any punishment they get. At least, that is what many Christians believe.
God’s Word tells us that is an abhorrent belief. I strongly agree! God is a covenant keeper. Humanity fails–repeatedly. God does not.
The Lord will keep his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
God Hears the Cry of the Israelites
Exodus 2:23 After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned and cried out under their burden of slavery, and their cry for deliverance from bondage ascended to God.
24 So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Read through the following verses and see if you can see the heart of God for His covenant people.
Ezra 3:11 After the Babylonian Captivity
With praise and thanksgiving, they sang to the LORD: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.” And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
Jeremiah 31:3 Before the Babylonian Captivity
The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
Romans 11:12
But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles. How much greater riches will their fullness bring!
Romans 11:25
I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, and sisters, so that you may not think you are superior. Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
Romans 11:26
And in this way, all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion. He will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
In the middle of the worst pogrom the Jewish People will ever experience, their Messiah will save them. It will actually be another attempt at a Jewish genocide. But Jesus will deliver them to safety. And with it, he will bring peace to the world. And for a thousand years, the world will experience rest from sorrows and wars.
Another Definition for Pogroms
The word “pogrom” is of Eastern European origin and is generally associated with violent, organized attacks on ethnic, religious, or social minority groups, particularly Jews.
It is believed by some, that the word “pogrom” comes from the Russian word “погром” (pogrom), which means “to wreak havoc” or “to demolish violently.” Pogroms were typically violent, often deadly, and organized attacks on Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, especially during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These attacks were usually carried out by mobs and were often supported or tolerated by the authorities.
The term “pogrom” gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as reports of violent anti-Jewish attacks in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe reached Western countries. One of the most infamous pogroms was the Kishinev pogrom in 1903 in present-day Moldova.
While the term “pogrom” is most closely associated with attacks on Jewish communities, it has also been used to describe violent attacks against other minority groups in various parts of the world. The word has become synonymous with organized, violent persecution of a particular group based on their ethnicity, religion, or social identity.
More Pogroms
Esther 3:6 Haman tried to kill every Jew
Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead, Haman looked for a way to destroy all of Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.
Matthew 2:16 King Herod tried to kill the Messianic Line
When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Throughout history, violence against Jewish populations has occurred in various forms, with different perpetrators, motivations, and victims. One of the most notorious instances of such violence is the series of pogroms against Jewish communities in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These events have striking parallels with the recent attacks by Hamas, on civilians, including babies, the elderly, and families.
Pogroms Against Jews in Europe
Pogroms were violent, organized attacks on Jewish communities, primarily in Eastern Europe, and they were often characterized by extreme brutality and destruction. The term “pogrom” originated from the Russian word “погром” (pogrom), meaning “to wreak havoc” or “to demolish violently.” These attacks were usually carried out by mobs and were sometimes supported or tolerated by the authorities. Key points in the history of pogroms include:
- Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed a surge in pogroms, notably in the Russian Empire, where anti-Jewish sentiment was widespread.
- Systematic Violence: Pogroms involved mass violence against Jewish individuals and property. Innocent civilians, including women and children, were often the primary victims.
- Motivations: Pogroms were driven by various factors, including economic tensions, religious prejudices, and political instability. The false belief that Jews were responsible for societal problems fueled the violence.
- International Outcry: Reports of pogroms prompted international outrage and calls for the protection of Jewish communities. The Kishinev pogrom of 1903 in present-day Moldova gained significant attention.
Hamas Attacks on Israeli Civilians. More Pogroms
In recent years, the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas, has resulted in a series of attacks against Israeli civilians, with tragic consequences for innocent non-combatants. While the historical context differs from the pogroms, there are striking similarities:
- Deliberate Targeting: Recent Hamas attacks have involved the deliberate targeting of Israeli cities and civilians, including babies and families, in violation of international humanitarian law. Evidence of rape among numerous young women and even babies has been revealed.
- Propaganda and Motivations: Hamas, like some perpetrators of pogroms, has used propaganda and skewed ideologies to justify its attacks. This includes using civilians as human shields. The Hamas Charter affirms their commitment to the total destruction of Israel.
- International Response: These attacks have drawn international condemnation, with calls for an end to violence and the protection of innocent lives. But sadly, as before, too many are silent or worse. Many are joining the chorus of “Death to the Jews.”
Conclusion
The historical pogroms against Jewish communities in Europe and recent attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians serve as grim reminders of the recurring pattern. Violence against the Jewish People is a Satanic imperative. He is determined to disrupt God’s plan for Israel. He will fail. But Satan’s puppet, the Antichrist, will die trying. And for Satan’s efforts, he will be chained for a thousand years. The world will enjoy that. The rest for the weary will finally arrive.
